"In interpreting the account of the crossing of the Red Sea we must acknowledge that the exact geographical setting of many of the events is uncertain.  The most important location is the 'Red Sea' (or as it is called in the Hebrew Bible, the 'Reed Sea').  We should not let the name 'Reed Sea' lead us to think that the sea was merely a marshland and that the biblical account of the dividing of the waters has been exaggerated.  In 1 Ki 9:26 it is the same 'Sea of Reeds' that served as the port of Solomon's fleet of ships.  This would have been a large and deep body of water.  In any event we know from the account in Exodus that the Israelites passed through this large body of water on dry land and that the Egyptians following them were drowned when the waters poured back over them."  (John H. Sailhamer, The NIV Compact Bible Commentary, ¬© 1994 Zondervan, pp. 79-80)
